Interests
I'm interested in humans, what they are and how they came to be that way. I'm particular taken by notions that we are a species that has been domesticated by our culture - a system of replicating information subject to selection pressures which has, in its own distinct way, adapted to our minds, which have in turn adapted to it. In short, our brains and culture have coevolved, we are adapted (in part) to be a vessel for evolving cultural instructions. In particular I test evolutionary hypotheses about the origins of culture by formally deriving their consequences for modern human psychology and testing these against how we really behave. Practically this involves a little mathematics and a lot of psychological lab studies. See my lab's website for more details.
I also like bicycle touring (though have been getting into kayaks recently), brewing beer and have recently been introduced to the joy of trashy sci-fi.
